What makes this honey special is its bitterness. The "Arbutus" variety, also known as strawberry tree honey or "Corbezzolo" by Italian beekeepers, is by far the most bitter honey in the world . Connoisseurs know just how bitter this honey can be, and anyone who prefers sweet honeys will be disappointed.
Honey from the strawberry tree is rare because the tree only blooms in autumn, and trade winds make it difficult for bees to fly at this time of year. Harvest yields are therefore very small, and demand is particularly high.
This is because, in traditional Mediterranean medicine, this honey is attributed with healing and strengthening properties. Without being able to actually verify these claims, beekeepers advertise its high vitamin C content and its ability to accelerate recovery from flu and colds. During the COVID-19 pandemic, reports also surfaced suggesting that this honey had at least a soothing effect. However, studies and laboratory data are lacking for all these claims.
