This delicious chestnut honey comes from the Lorber family farm in southern Styria. The farm is known for its award-winning pumpkin seed oil and the pollination of its oil pumpkins by its own bees and bumblebees.
Chestnut honey is a specialty of southern Styria. The southern exposure, with its many hours of sunshine and warm temperatures, promotes the growth of the chestnut trees. Similar to the chestnut itself, the honey is tart and not sweet. We prefer this chestnut honey as an accompaniment to a snack, especially with all kinds of hard cheese. But it is also very enjoyable with feta and mozzarella.
The beekeeping operation is certified organic by Austria Bio-Garantie (certificate number: 2-00313-2024), but chooses not to label the honey as organic. This means that the honey jars do not bear an organic label, even though the beekeeper adheres to organic standards. The reason given is a high proportion of conventional agriculture in the immediate vicinity.
