This honey comes from a New Zealand tree species called " Rewarewa " in the Maori language. Since this tree species is endemic to New Zealand, there is no English translation for it. English-speaking settlers called the tree "Honeysuckle".

Rewarewa trees are native mainly to the North Island, but also to the north of the South Island, in the so-called Marlborough Sounds . These are deep valleys that were flooded by the rising sea level and now form a network of rias.

The tree itself is an evergreen deciduous tree with a considerable height of up to 30 m. Rewarewa trees rely on the work of birds and insects to pollinate the flowers. This is why the flowers are striking in color, size and shape. For the honey bees of New Zealand beekeepers, Rewarewa trees are a very good source of nectar with a high honey yield.

Rewarewa honey is rather solid when cold and becomes creamy as the temperature rises. However, this honey does not become completely liquid. Its taste is very multifaceted and a striking malty, earthy taste is noticeable. It is most comparable to a dark forest honey in Central Europe.
