New to the range is Austrian poppy seed oil from the Gressl family's poppy seed farm. It is located in Ottenschlag, about 110 km from Vienna, nestled in its own poppy fields.
We have been purchasing products from the Gressl family for over 8 years, including the popular poppy seed honey. Due to our positive experiences so far, we are expanding our range to include high-quality and rarely offered poppy seed oil.
We can offer you the following variants:
- Grey poppy seed oil: Pure, cold-pressed poppy seed oil from the first pressing, completely natural; the mild, fine poppy seed flavor goes perfectly with salads, raw vegetables and pasta dishes.
- Basil poppy seed oil: Pure, cold-pressed poppy seed oil from the first pressing, completely natural and refined with basil leaves; the delicate basil aroma goes perfectly with mozzarella (instead of imported olive oil), tomato salad and Mediterranean dishes.
Poppyseed oil should also be considered as an ingredient in spreads. In general, valuable ingredients are only preserved when used cold without heating.
The tradition of poppy cultivation in the Waldviertel goes back to the Middle Ages. There are documents from the Zwettl monastery dating back to 1280 that document the monks growing poppy. Then as now, poppy is the basis for the active ingredient morphine , which is used to treat pain, anxiety, insomnia, etc. Some suppliers therefore advertise a similar effect for poppy seed oil. However, these effects have not been proven by research and should not simply be assumed to be true. What is true, however, is the high vitamin content (see nutritional table in the photo) and that poppy seed oil tastes - in our opinion better than olive oil, which is often perceived as bitter. And of course, by using Waldviertel poppy seed oil you also avoid the high chance of buying cheap oil blends or other fake products.
